The Story of my Blog Title

Quilt of Dragonflies- My blog is named that for a reason.I am lucky enough to own a genuine Quilt of Dragonflies, which I am sure brings me good dreams when I sleep beneath it. It was given to me by a friend of my mother's, who handmade the entire thing. Color meets pattern in this fantastic piece of artwork which sits on my bed. Brilliant shades of purple, blue, and green intersperse with tie dye dragonflies. I will not hesitate to call it my inspiration.

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"The best of happiness,
Honour and fortunes, keep with you!"
-Timon of Athens

Night Owl

Night owl
Soaring through ebony skies
Ripping open the universe
Tearing at the fabric of midnight
Silent and swift
Cutting the stars into jagged little pieces
Which fall to earth
And lie as splinters
On the ground

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Anger is like
A full-hot horse, who being allow'd his way,
Self mettle tires him"
-King Henry VIII

Whiff of Summer

A whiff of summer
Knocks on the door
A hot
And humid day
Begs for your attention
Flowers sprouting
Leaves uncurling
Grass growing greener
You see
Out of the back of your mind
And you sigh in relief

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"If we offend, it is with our good will.
That you should think, we come not to offend,
But with good will."
-A Midsummer Night's Dream

Mist swirls through the trees
Creating a magic

Fight for What is Right

Do you feel for the polar bear?
Drowning in icy water, gasping for air
The poor arctic penguins, losing their home
Do you know they will have nowhere to roam?
Oil spills spreading stickiness and death
Is the seagull breathing his last breath?
Think about this when you leave on the light
Whatever you do, continue to fight!

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"To sleep, perchance to dream-
ay, there's the rub."
-Hamlet

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie,
Which we ascribe to Heaven."
-All's Well That Ends Well

Boredom

Dullness
Boredom
Sitting and dreaming
Swirls of color
Drift by your eyes
What is happening in the world outside?
Music trills in your ears
The room you are sitting in is silent
Fingers tap against the table
Toes itch to move
Yawn

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Let every eye negotiate for itself
And trust no agent; for beauty is a witch
Against whose charms faith melteth in blood."
-Much Ado About Nothing

Dew

Light dances across
A single drop of water
The grass is happy

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"As in theatre, the eyes of men,
After a well graced actor leaves the stage,
Are idly bent on him that enters next"
-King Richard II

I want to take this opportunity to wish William Shakespeare a very happy birthday!! His birthday was actually yesterday, and I am very sorry but I totally forgot. Use this time to remember him and the incredible works he was responsible for. I consider him one of the best writers of all time, if not the best. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILL!!!

Easter Egg

One small round egg can hold a surprise
But before Easter you're left to surmise
What can they hold?
Could it be gold?
Might it be goodies in disguise?

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;"
-As You Like It

Just Another Rainy Day

Rain dribbles
Down the window pane
Bushes leak water
Trees hang low
Pavement grows two shades darker
Energy flees
Happiness dwindles

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Nothing can come of nothing: speak again."
-King Lear

Lazy Days

Lying
Face upward in a soft puddle of grass
Staring at the sky
Pondering the world
Yet not thinking about anything
The cornflower blue
Floating above you
Your arms
Dangling close to your face
Blocking your eyes from the sun
Doe brown
Sunlight
Beams down upon you
A thin smile
Skirts your lips

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Done to death by slanderous tongue
Was the Hero that here lies"
-Much Ado About Nothing

Cold

On a frigid day
A little animal
Begins to nibble my fingers
Tentatively at first
Then faster
My fingers protest
They ache
Then go numb
As they are fully consumed
By the hungry little creature
Named
Cold

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"So wise so young, they say do never live long"
-King Richard III

My Ankle

Swelled
Bruised and sore
An everlasting ache
A strange mix of color
Purple and light green
Navy blue
Trickle of blood
Under my sock and shinguard
Accidental?
Cold from ice
Ouch!

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Why then the world's mine oyster,
Which I with sword will open."
-The Merry Wives of Windsor

Early Morning Run

Birds are chirping through the dawn
Light reflects off dewy lawn
Sneakers squeak on slippery grass
Trees bow in greeting as I pass
The chilly air sinks into my skin
But this morning I run to win
Jogging to the rough round track
Sprint as if fleeing from attack
Sweat trickles down my shirt
As my ankles and legs begin to hurt
Yet nothing this morning can dampen the day
At six o'clock I went out to play

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"My words fly up, my thoughts remain below;
Words without thoughts never to heaven go"
-Hamlet

Not Being Able to Fall Asleep

Insomnia sits
In the corner of my brain
My mind won't shut down

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and howlet's wing,--
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble."
-Macbeth

Why?

Why do I feel
weighted down?
Why is my brain
about to shut down?
Why is the blood oozing so slowly through my veins?
Why do I wish I could drift off to sleep, yet my body refuses?
Am I too tired to fall asleep?
Why do I feel like a zombie?
Why?

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar."
-Julius Caesar

Chill

A crisp breath of air
Flutters and laughs in my face
Taunting my coldness

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Come, let's away to prison;
We two alone will sing like birds I' th' cage"
-King Lear

Busy busy busy

rushing
from one activity
to the next
pausing to breathe, hands on knees
grabbing bags and clothing
from around the house
packing equipment
unpacking
changing clothes
panting
why am I
feeling so overbooked
overworked
sometimes
I wish I could
curl up into a tight ball
in a corner
just for a moment
of peace

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following;
but I will not eat with you, drink with you, nor pray with you."
-The Merchant of Venice

Varmints

Voracious varmints
Forage for food-filled finds
 Eerie eyes
Seek something sugary or sweet
Claws caress other cringing critters
Silly sounds come singing
From the depths of their dangerous mouths
Help!
Save us from these hurtful heathens!

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before."
-Sonnet 60

Peanut Butter Jar

I spent a day gazing at a peanut butter jar
Feasting my brown eyes from afar
Just one spoonful, one tiny lick
Not even enough to make me feel sick
How high must I set my bar?

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"O! it is excellent
To have a giant's strength, but it is tyrannous
To use it like a giant."
-Measure for Measure

Good and Bad Times

Bad times
Are bad
They can eat away at your insides
Burn your stomach and manipulate your mind
Sorrow can drown you in
A pool of salty tears
You may start to cave in
Until you melt away
And there is only a shell left
Good times
Are good
You bubble and chuckle
Like a frolicking brook
You radiate golden
Bands of light
Your smile will light up a room
And fill the world with peace and happiness
Please
Stay happy
For the sake of the people
Who are part of your life
And for you
Always for you

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"It is a custom
More honour'd in the breach than the observance."
-Hamlet

Guests

Guests bring smiles
Hugs and happy times
Memories dredged up from the  bottom of your heart
Gifts and good company
A new playmate
A new helper
A new person to have a conversation with
Guests bring fresh faces and listening ears
But most of all
Guests bring love

They flash past as we drive down

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"For pleasure and revenge,
Have ears more deaf than adders to the voice
Of any true decision"
-Troilus and Cressida

My sad attempt to write a doggerel

Today I explored the vast amounts of poetry I have no idea how to write. It's always good to  learn more, and some of them sound great! I think I will attempt a doggerel, because it sounds new and exciting. A doggerel is a whimsical poem which usually makes little sense and is loosely constructed. There seems to be no set format, so I decided to give it a shot.

My stuffed animals stare at me
But how can they stare if they can't see?
A bear hug from my teddy would be nice
But on the downside-I think he has lice

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"I count myself in nothing else so happy
As in a soul remembering my good friends."
-King Richard II

Can You Imagine?

If animals talked
Would they be good company?
Can you imagine?

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Now stand you on the top of happy hours,
And many maiden gardens yet unset,
With virtuous wish would bear you living flowers."
-Sonnet 16

The Acorn and the Squirrel

It was a sunny and bright afternoon
The day the squirrel stored his food
Deep in the warm dry soil
He buried a solitary acorn
The sun smiled down on the small mammal
That had placed his trust so completely in
Mother Nature
The winter winds began to blow that night
Cold and sharp
They warned the squirrel of blizzards and whiteness to come
The squirrel
At ease with his source of food
Curled up in his
Warm and dry den
And settled into dreams
Imagining warm nights sitting by the fire
Unaware of the tempest howling outside his door
The acorn sat lonely in the rock hard ground
Its only hope being the sun
Which was destined to come out someday
And warm the ground around the acorn
Freeing it from the prison of winter
These two dreamers, their lives connected by a thread
The acorn and the squirrel

Winter passes
Spring arrives
The squirrel is lean and hungry
He hungers for the acorn

It was a sunny and bright afternoon
The day the squirrel went searching for his stores
He nosed the fine and crumbling earth in search of something
The acorn
Fruitlessly scuffling in the earth
The squirrel glances up
And sees the acorn
No longer an acorn
But a spot of green in the rough brown dirt
The acorn had accomplished its mission
The squirrel doggedly sets off
Searching for another acorn
While the victorious acorn
Snatched from the clutches of the squirrel by Mother Nature
Continues to grow

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Journeys end in lovers meeting,
Every wise man's son doth know."
-The Tempest

Being Sleepy

Tiredness is like a blanket
Softly covering
Every inch of you
Making you more and more comfortable
Until you feel warm
And calm
And you slip away
Into sleep

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"Was there ever any man thus beaten out of season,
When in the why and the wherefore is neither rhyme nor reason?"
-A Comedy of Errors

Singing puddles

Murky puddles sing
To the sky with every drop
A deep melody

Shakespeare Quote of the Day

"I have seen a medicine
That's able to breathe life into a stone"
-All's Well That Ends Well

Keep Running

My soles
Slap softly against the damp pavement
In tune with the rhythm of my heartbeats
In sync
My lungs
Expand and contract
Heaving my chest up and down
My throat feels clogged
My brain feels as if it is working hard
Yet I concentrate on one thought alone
Keep running
Through all my problems
Keep running
Despite all obstacles
Keep running
All you will see
Is the back of my sneakers
I am a winner
And I will
Keep running

Shakespeare Quote of Yesterday

Wow! I cannot believe I forgot the Shakespeare quote yesterday. How could I?
Well, at least I lasted for a long time before forgetting. I knew I would eventually, because I am a very forgetful person, but until now I had never forgotten anything. So, so sorry!
-Claire

"O sleep, O gentle sleep, nature's soft nurse, how have I frightened thee, that thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down and steep my senses in forgetfulness?"
-Henry IV

Leaf

Lonely leaf hanging
Solitary and alone
It falls to the ground
